P. Lokesh clinches the title

The second Modern School International Fide Rating Chess Championship held
at Modern Senior Secondary School, from 04th to 8th August 2009 for a prize
pool of Rs.1, 00,000/-

Sri D.V. Sundar, Secretary, All India Chess Federation inaugurated the Second
Modern School International Fide Rating Chess Championship for School
students at Modern Senior Secondary School, Chennai 600 061 on 4th August 2009
at 9am. Shri D V Sundar,Secretary,AICF appreciated the Modern senior
Secondary School especially Shri PC Vaidyanathan, Secretary Modern school for
organizing the unique FIDE Rated school children event for a second year in a row
and asked the organisers to fix up a date well in advance to enable many players
from India to take part in this event.


This Rating Chess Championship was organized by Modern Senior
Secondary School,Nanganallur,Chennai-61 under the auspices of Tamilnadu
State Chess Association and All India Chess Federation .


Main sponsor for this event was Modern Senior Secondary School, Chennai and they
proved free lodging and Boarding to all players, free hospitality to officials, arbiters
etc and also sponsoring the entire prize money of Rs.1,00,000/-

Master P.Lokesh of Velammal Matriculation school, won the championship with
8points received the cash prize of Rs 25000 along with a Trophy. The top twelve
were given the cash prizes in the main list and six special cash prizes for
each category in Under8/10/12/14

This event attracted 250 participants from various States like Andhra, Karnataka, Pondichery, Orissa, WestBengal, Maharastra and also from all over districts in Tamilnadu like Chennai, Kanchi, Madurai, Tiruvellor, Kanyakumari,Salem,Tiruvarur,Thanjavur,Vellore,Coimbatore Trichy, etc.,


Participation of nearly 74 rated players including top players like top seeded TN State sub-junior champion Ajay Srikanth,TN Under 25 state champion G.Akash,P.Lokesh,Savetha,Akash PC Iyer etc., made the event so competitive.

This event was 9 round Swiss format FIDE rating chess tournament. This was a unique School students Rating chess Tournament is being organized as a FIDE Rated event in India and many unrated players got opportunity to get ratings.
The players exhibited high standards of fighting spirit as a sole leader emerged at the end of the 8th round only.
At the end of the 5th round two players Ajay Srikanth & Kaushik of Jawahar Vidyalaya were in lead with 5 points each.
At the end of 6th round 2 more players Anandraj & Akash joined the leaders with 5.5 points each.
In the 7th round the top seeded Ajay Srikanth suffered defeats at the hands of S.Anandraj, two players – Anandraj & Kaushik emerged leaders at the end of this round.
In the 8th round S.Anandraj of SRDK Vivekananda Vidyalaya,emerged sole leader with 7.5 points. He was closely followed by P.Lokesh of Velammal with 7 points.
In the 9th and final round of the event which decided the winner, Lokesh outwitted Anandraj in a tense battle to clinch the title with 8 points.
On the colourful Prize distribution function Shri J C D Prabakaran,Vice President,Tamilnadu State Chess Association presided over the function, Ln N Vijayan,President,Kanchi Dist chess assn distributed the prizes and Shri K Muralimohan,General Secretary,TNSCA felicitated the winners
